What is this Test About?
Bilirubin levels are commonly tested in ascitic fluid in patients suspected of bile duct leak or gall bladder perforation. High level supports the diagnosis of Choleperitoneum. A study has shown that drain fluid to serum bilirubin ratio of >5 is indicative of bile leak. Ascitic fluid to serum bilirubin ratio of >3.25 is highly specific for bile leak in liver transplant recipients. In other fluids like pleural fluid, this test is used to differentiate between transudates & exudates.
