What is this Test About?
ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 motif, 13) is an enzyme that specifically cleaves usually large von Willebrand Factor (VWF) multimers. If activity of ADAMTS13 is decreased, either because of an inherited mutation within ADAMTS13 gene, or because of the development of an autoantibody, the accumulation of ultra large VWF multimers may cause microvascular thrombosis due to platelet aggregation and produce syndrome of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP). This assay is performed to confirm TTP diagnosis and may also be used in the prediction of TTP relapse.
