ALLERGEN CITRUS FRUIT PANEL
5 Allergens
Citrus allergies are most common in older children and young adults, but can develop at any age. In the case of citrus allergies, the body sees the protein profilin as a toxin, rather than a food. The immune system reacts by releasing histamines and antibodies to fight the toxin, causing symptoms such as swelling, rashes, throat swelling, gastrointestinal issues and more. Most allergic reactions to fruit affect the mouth, but can also affect any skin that comes in contact with the allergen.
